2018 - The Life You Love

An Quick Intro to Tarot Cards and Readings

Okay, I'm not a historian, so bear with me as I probably butcher the history of tarot.  Tarot started as a card game that depicted the minor and major milestones, problems, and triumphs of everyday life.  Stuff like life, love, and loss.  When they were first created, they had TONS of Christian imagery and had no connection to mysticism, which makes sense since Christianity was the main form of religion and the way that people lived their lives..  One article I read suggested that they were actually used to play a sort of "MASH" or "choose your own adventure" game and to write stories, poems, and other literature.

Eventually, the woo woo side of tarot developed and that may be why you've heard of tarot today.  It's still pretty misunderstood.  I'm not going to go too far into it, but just a quick search about the history of tarot can tell you quite a bit of information.  Today, I use tarot cards as prompts and reminders to focus on certain areas or themes in life.  I use them to reflect on what's going on in my life and to make sense of what I'm experiencing.  People use them for a variety of reasons, ranging from journaling about certain themes to predicting the future.

The best way to learn how to read tarot cards is to get a deck and a book (or four).  You can also use free websites like Learning the Tarot, Biddy Tarot, or The Tarot Guide.  There are definitely more websites out there, but these are some of my favorites.  Start reading books about tarot and doing tarot card readings for yourself or for others.  Another great, but time-consuming, way to learn the tarot card meanings is to pull one card each morning, look up the meanings of the card, and then find ways to apply it or look for it during that day.  Journaling about your card readings or card pulls is also key in learning tarot!

Your first tarot deck should be one that has easy-to-read symbolism, one that brings up memories and emotions.  There are TONS of decks out there.  I used Instagram to search for pictures of tarot decks and then looked for reviews of decks that had imagery I admired.  One of my first decks was The Wild Unknown tarot deck by Kim Krans.

Reading tarot cards doesn't have to be fancy and complicated.  You can simply focus your attention on a question or topic, shuffle the cards, and pull your cards when it feels "right."  Add in any details that make you feel more connected to the cards.  Maybe burn incense or candle.  Surround yourself with healing crystals.  Turn on some ambient music.  Do whatever feels best for you.  And keep practicing to get better!  Reading tarot cards is just like any skill... it takes time and practice!

If you have any questions about reading tarot cards, let me know and I'll try to answer them or find an answer for you!

Simple Fourth of July Decor

Where's the face-palm emoji when you need it?  I was so excited to blog about my Independence Day decor and even had just a little blurb written out beforehand, but I totally forgot to schedule the post.  Anyways, I decided that I would go ahead and post anyways.  The decor wasn't super fancy and I didn't have a ton written, but I still wanted to share because this is the first holiday that we celebrated in OUR house!  So here's my super late Fourth of July post.

Happy Fourth of July!  I'm sure all of you are enjoying the fireworks, picnics, and day off.  I just wanted to share some of our simple Fourth of July decor with y'all.  We didn't have a lot of extra time and energy to put towards decorating because of the move, but I did just a little bit.  Michael's and Target always have the cutest decor and it was all so affordable!  I actually didn't plan on decorating the house for the Fourth until I saw this cute fireworks sign at Michael's.  Adding these cute patriotic touches to our simple home decor makes me even more excited for some of the bigger holidays, like Halloween and Christmas (aka my favorite holidays and the best holidays to decorate for).  Do you decorate for the holidays? If so, which is your favorite to decorate for?

Tips For Buying Your First House + Our 1st House!

Buying a house has been one of the most frustrating, yet exciting, things that Paul and I have done so far.  We had to figure out what we wanted in a house both as individuals and as a couple.  We wanted to figure out what best fit our current needs, but might also be able to keep up with any changes in the next 5-10 years.  We ended up in a totally different area (and technically city) than we expected.  And as cliche as it is, when we walked into this house, we knew that it had to be our home.  After a couple weeks of unpacking and moving, we're finally at a point where I feel like this is OUR home and I'm excited to be able to share more pictures of how we decorate the house, especially for the holidays!

make a list of what you want, need, and could live without or don't want

First of all, how are you supposed to know which house if right for you if you don't know what you're looking for?!  Same goes for the neighborhood or land where you'll live.  And knowing what you want and what you don't want will help you stay unswayed by anyone else's opinions.  Several people are going to have opinions about what they think your house should have or shouldn't have, where it should be, what kind of floors you want, but guess what...

this is your house so take other people's opinions with a grain of salt

Of course, you want to hear opinions and you want to ask people about their experiences.  But at the end of the day, this is where YOU have to live!  I was probably too stubborn because I pretty much ignored everyone's opinions because I was so blindsided by what I thought I wanted.  Don't be that extreme.

do keep an open mind

I know my first point was to figure out what you want and my second point was to stick to what you want, but of course you also need to be a little open-minded.  What you may picture for your house may be totally different than what you actually like in person.  Maybe an area isn't as special as you hoped.  Or maybe you'll realize that you actually do like something that you swore you'd never have in your house.

take videos and pictures of each house you tour

This was one of the most helpful things I did while we looked at houses.  The videos and photos online tend to be either a) crappy and unflattering or b) heavily staged and edited.  Taking photos will help you not only remember certain details of a house, but it's also incredibly helpful in planning where your furniture will go.  It's nice to have an idea of where you want things before you go so you aren't moving the same piece of furniture around over and over.

3 Things No One Tells You About Graduate School

As I'm writing this, I just finished my 2nd year of my master's program and I have one more year left.  If I'm being honest, I'm basically just going through the motions so I can get the degree.  I've been learning a lot from my internship, but not so much from my classes.  Of course, each person and each program is different.  There are some things, however, that I think might be the same for anyone regardless of where they are in their program or what program they're in.

1. If you don't make time for what you value, it could suffer.

Your health, your relationships, your self-care... all of those important parts of your life may come second to graduate school if you don't tend to them.  While some people might think that school needs to come first, I completely disagree.  If you don't have a strong foundation, everything else will come crumbling down.  Make time for yourself.  Make time for the people you care about.  Learn how to be more intentional with your time.

2. You'll probably feel like quitting at least once.

Notice how I said at least.  Some people might feel like dropping out once during their program, others - like me - might feel like dropping out at least once per week.  Why?  Because it's exhausting and it's challenging.  I don't find my program particularly challenging, but it is draining.  Just remind yourself why you began the program and what you want to do after you graduate.  If that doesn't work, remind yourself how much time and money you've already poured into the program.

3. You'll feel close to the people in your cohort.

Regardless of whether or not you hang out with your classmates, there is a certain feeling of closeness that you may experience.  Think about all of the projects, papers, and late nights that you've all had.  Think of all of the texts about what's due when and what they got for #4.  Your classmates understand what you dealt with and that's something special.

If the job that you want requires a master's degree, go for it.  If you'll get higher pay for having a master's degree, go for it.  If you just want a master's degree, go for it.  Just prepare yourself for some difficulties and try to stay positive.  And don't forget to take care of yourself!

My Morning Skincare Routine

For the past... my entire life... I've told myself that I was going to figure out a morning routine that helps me feel refreshed and ready to go.  I'm still working on part of it, but I finally have the skincare part down.  I've been using this routine for a few days and my skin is so thankful haha! I have a few more skincare products coming my way and I'll update this when I start using them!

STEP 1 | Cleanser | Find a cleanser that fits your needs. People with oily skin will need different ingredients than someone with dry skin. I use our Normal-to-Dry 3-in-1 Cleanser. Once summer hits, I'll start using our Normal-to-Oily 3-in-1 Cleanser. Your skin care needs change with the seasons.  I use just a small amount, maybe a dime size.

STEP 2 | LashExtend | I use our black LashExtend to help my lashes grow longer, thicker, and stronger. I will also start using clear LashExtend at night. I use black during the day because eyeliner gives the appearance of longer, thicker lashes. Just a small bit at the base of your lashes is all you need!

STEP 3 | Climate Control | This product helps moisturize your skin to provide the best hydration it'll ever get! It also works with the rest of our products with SenePlex to help aid in cell renewal. You MUST use SeneSerum-C and/or moisturizer after using this product to help seal it in. I use 3 spritzes. One on the left side of my face, one on the right side of my face, and one on my forehead.

STEP 4 | SeneSerum-C | This 100% natural product works to repair damaged cells and protect your cells from further damage. It also works as a shield to protect you from pollutants. And like most of our products, it contains SenePlex to help your skin appear firmer, younger, and healthier. I use just 1 pump of this product and massage it into my skin for about 30 seconds.

I had to include this before and after photo because WOW!  It really shows just how amazing these products are.  I was skeptical when I first started using them because it sounds too good to be true, but it's not!  It's too good AND true!

STEP 5 | Nangai Oil | I'm 99% sure this is the remedy for any problem that you're facing. I'm currently using it to help fade a scar that I've had since I was about 10 years old AND to help erase stretch marks. It's also been used for eczema, dry skin, rashes, and more. Seriously, it can be used for anything. It's also super hydrating and helps lock in moisture without making your skin feel oily or greasy. I use just a couple drops on my stretch marks and a drop on my scar.

STEP 6 | Color Correcting Tinted Moisturizer | As soon as I tried this product, I immediately knew why everyone loves it. Not only is it super moisturizing, but it also offers a mechanical shield to protect your skin from the sun while also correcting redness, age spots, and sun damage. This product is suitable for ALL skin types, even if you're prone to acne! It comes in Light or Medium. I use just 1 pump for my entire face!

STEP 7 | EyeCreme | Did you know that your eyes are one of the first places to show aging? Think about it: the skin around your eyes is the thinnest on your body and your eyes are constantly moving! This product helps fill in lines and wrinkles while also improving cellular renewal with SenePlex! Just like all of our products, a little goes a long way.

And there ya have it! My morning skincare routine. It seems like a lot, but I promise it goes by quickly and it's totally worth it. If you really don't have time or money to do all of these steps, I for sure recommend using SeneSerum-C, Color Correcting Tinted Moisturizer, and EyeCreme. Any combination of our products is great, though!

Worst Case Scenario

"What's the worst thing that can happen?" can either be your famous last words or the question that finally gets your butt in gear.  I want you to think of something right now that you've thought about doing, saying, or trying.  Anything that you haven't done yet because you're afraid of what might happen  In fact, let's make this a little journaling prompt.

Take out one of those journals that you've been hoarding for "a special occasion" and don't pretend you don't have at least 10 of them right now.  Flip it open and write down something that you've always wanted to do, but haven't done because you're scared.

Now below it, I want to write down the worst possible things that could happen to you.  And be realistic.  Unless you're doing something dangerous or life-threatening, death probably is not the worst thing that can happen to you.

Do you see where I'm going with this?  Most of the time, we're afraid of something and we don't even know why.  We're afraid to speak our minds, even though the worst thing that can happen is that someone disagrees with us (or you lose your job... be smart, y'all).  We're afraid to start a blog, but the worst thing that could happen is that only your mom reads it.  Isn't mom the best?!  We're afraid to open up our own business because holy shit we could lose money?!  As if I haven't already wasted thousands of dollars at Starbucks.

Alright, one more time... next I want you to write down everything GOOD that could happen if you finally did that thing that scared you.  Seriously.  Go for the best possible scenario.  Most of the time, we find that the good possibilities outweigh the bad.  Sure, they require a lot of time and energy.  But aren't they worth trying for?!

So again, take out that brand-new journal (you stationary hoarder) and write about the following:
1. What's one thing that I've always wanted to do that terrifies me?
2. What's the worst thing that could happen if I went for it?  List them all until you've gotten to the worst possible scenario.
3. What's the best thing that could happen if I went for it?  Again, list them all!

As a bonus, I want you to envision life after you've finally gone for your goal and reached your best case scenario.  Write about what your life looks like now, who you are now that you've reached your goal, and how you feel that you're finally there.  Don't just write this, but really envision it and feel it. Give yourself permission to play pretend in the most exciting and motivating way possible!

Make 2018 the year that you push yourself until you reach your best case scenario.

Woo Woo 101: Healing Crystals

Whether you call them stones or crystals or “my little babies,” healing crystals have been used for THOUSANDS of years and for good reason.  Before I even get into all that shit, let's talk about what healing crystals even are.  Typically, they’re semi-precious gemstones that are used for the protection and healing that they provide.  While each stone is generally known for a handful of characteristics, some of them also overlap.  For example, amethyst is known for aiding in dream recall and in sobriety.  Red Jasper can also be programmed for use in dream recall, while lepidolite is often used for breaking negative habits.  And that’s just a very small example.  Here are some of the questions that I normally receive when I talk about healing crystals, as well as what I tell people.

how do you choose which crystals to work with?

There’s no right or wrong way to select your crystals.  Here are two ways that I generally use.  One, I look up crystals that relate to certain needs or ailments.  If I’d like to ward off negative energy, for example, I might find that black crystals will be my best bet.  Two, I go to my local metaphysical shop and I choose a crystal that seems to be calling to me.  Then I go home and research more about the crystal’s benefits.  This gives the Universe a more active role in showing me what I should work on as opposed to me consciously choosing my focus.  When it comes to actually picking the exact specimen to come home with me, though, I generally see which crystal catches my eye and hold it to see how it makes me feel.  You’ll know if the crystal is meant to be yours or not by just holding it.  Trust me.

how does this work?

Here’s my honest to Universe answer: I don’t fucking know.  I just trust that it works because it does for me.  Science tells us that there’s nothing about crystal healing that is a fact.  What experience tells me, though, is that they have improved my life.  Whether it’s the energy I receive from being around my crystal babies or the meanings that I remember when I look at them, I have found that my rose quartz makes me a more loving person and I do feel that Citrine helps me feel happier.  The thing is, there’s a lot of shit in this world that doesn’t make sense according to facts and science.  That’s what spirituality and woo woo shit is for.

which crystals should I start with?

All of them.  Jk, but not really.  When first starting with crystals, I think it’s helpful to select crystals based on what you’re hoping to receive from them.  You could also peruse Etsy for kits.  They’ll probably still align with a specific intention or theme or they may align with the chakras.  Either way, it’s a good way to start your crystal fam.  I started with clear quartz, amethyst, howlite, dendritic agate, and black tourmaline because they had the kind of energy that I needed at the time.

how do you use healing crystals?

If you want a certain room to hold a particular energy, place crystals with those properties in that room.  In your bedroom, for example, put amethyst for sweet dreams and rose quartz for intimacy and love.  Put pyrite, which calls in abundance and wealth, in your office, next to a stone like fluorite that provides focus.  You can also buy healing crystal jewelry and wear it when you want to invoke certain energies.  And you can also carry your crystals with you.  Put them in your purse, your pocket, or your bra.  Been there, done that.  Whatever you do, you want the crystals near you so you can absorb their positive energies and they can protect you from negative energy.

how do you take care of them?

This is where you’ll want to do plenty of your own research.  There are several methods of energetically cleansing your crystals, such as sunlight, moonlight, salt, burying them, running water, and visualization.  There are also some crystals that are particularly sensitive to some methods of cleansing.  Celestite, for example, doesn’t do well in sunlight.  Its brilliant blue will fade.  Selenite can disintegrate when exposed to water.  And some crystals like lapis lazuli shouldn’t make contact with salt.  Make sure you research your crystals and their properties before you do anything with them.

And that's just a small intro to the wonderful world of healing crystals. If you have any questions, let me know! I could also recommend some books and websites, if you want to learn more.  Let me know if you use any healing crystals or if you're interested in them!

Goodbye 2017, Hello 2018!

2017 was a great year for me.  Paul and I rang in the New Year with his parents, brother, sister-in-law, and his sister-in-law's parents, who were visiting from Colombia.  In February, Paul and I celebrated 3 years together!  In just a few weeks, we'll be celebrating 4 years.  My family came to visit for my sisters' spring break, which was in March.

In April, I discovered how much I love all things woo woo, from healing crystals to tarot decks to smudging.  Paul's oldest brother, his sister-in-law, and their three kids visited in June, right before Paul and I made the move to our rental house.  That's a quick summary of the first half of the year!

July was pretty busy!  We celebrated Paul's birthday, I went to Connecticutt for an alumni summit, we moved into the house, and I visited my family and best friend in Tybee Island, GA.  I turned 24 in August, went to Charleston for my friend's bachelorette party, and started my internship, which I absolutely love.

My mom visited us at our house in October!  I visited one of my best friend's for her bridal shower and I hosted Thanksgiving for the first time ever. In December, Paul and I visited my family for Christmas.  My best friend got married.  I started reading tarot cards professionally and I became a SeneGence Independent Distributor!

For the most part, I don't know what 2018 has in store for me.  More birthdays, more holidays, and maybe even more engagements and weddings. I also plan on staying at my internship, continuing to read tarot cards, and helping women feel confident and beautiful with SeneGence.  I also want to blog more often and more consistently.  I want to connect with the blog and Insta community more.  I want to continue to make our house feel like a home.  I want to enjoy every positive moment of the year and learn from every negative moment of the year.  To try to capture everything I want to experience this year, I chose two words to use as my theme of the year: opportunity and abundance!  I hope that I not only receive abundance and opportunity, but also seek them and create my own.

Do you have a theme for 2018?  Any goals you want to accomplish?  Most importantly, is there anything we can do to help each other reach our goals?
