4 Reasons Your Beach Vaca is Good For You

As if you even needed another reason to go to the beach..

After a quick weekened trip to Ocean Isle Beach, NC, I was feeling inspired to share some benefits of the beach with y'all.  If you don't have access to the beach, don't stop reading because I have suggestions for you, too!  If you do, you'll just want to go ahead and pack your bags.  Besides the fact that the beach is simply gorgeous, it can be amazing for every area of your holistic health.

Negative ions are freakin' awesome.  You can't sense them, but they're abundant when you're at the beach.  What makes negative ions so amazing is that they can elevate your mood and energy, and decrease your stress.  They can also be beneficial for people with depression with very few - if any - side effects.  Negative ions also increase oxygen levels in your brain, which means you'll feel more awake and aware when you're surrounded by them.  Read this article if you're interested in learning more.

Negative ions are often produced by running water.  That means being by a waterfall or even taking a shower can produce some similar effects! You can also get the benefits of negative ions from a Himalayan salt lamp.  I never turn mine off.

Most people know that we can get Vitamin D from the sun.  We know it's good for us.  But why?    WebMD always has the answers for us.  Similar to negative ions, vitamin D is great for your mood, especially for people experiencing depression and anxiety.  It's also really good for your physical health and can even prevent heart problems.  Being at the beach is a fun way to soak up some vitamin D!  But after you've been outside for about 5-10 minutes, make sure that you put on sunscreen.  Seriously, WebMD has a great article that can tell you all about vitamin D.

Just get outside!  All you need is 5-10 minutes of sun on 2-3 days a week to get the benefits.  You can also take supplements, but talk to your doctor before you do. It is possible to take toxic levels of vitamin D.

When I saw this article about "blue mind," I KNEW I had to share it with y'all because it's just too good.  Feeling blue is usually associated with feeling sad, but this article tells us that being near the ocean and having a blue mind can increase creativity and meditative thoughts.  It's kind of like when you take a shower and you all of a sudden have a bunch of ideas or find yourself totally immersed in the shower.  Plus, it's super humbling to look out at the ocean and remember how big our world is.  Check out this Huffington Post article for more info!

Another benefit that you can get from taking a shower!  While your showering, try to be mindful and use all of your senses to increase the benefits.  Think about what you're smelling, hearing, seeing, and feeling (probably not tasting).

Sea salt is actually believed to be good for your skin!  I used to think that it would be super drying and damaging, but it's apparently hydrating, exfoliating, and cleansing.  It can also help heal minor scratches and cuts, as well as balance your skin's oils.  There are SO many benefits and uses for saltwater.  Taking a dip in the ocean to cool off can totally give you these benefits while you're soaking up all of the other benefits of being at the beach!

Take a salt bath!  Epsom salt and pink Himalayan salt are both very beneficial and available at pretty much any store or website.  Here are a few detox bath recipes that you may want to try!
