What Holistic Living Means to Me

The holistic movement that you find when you Google "holistic living" or "holistic health" seems to suggest that you have to be a paleo vegan and you can't use any manufactured cleaning products.  That kind of shit.  If that's what you're into, you go girl.

I'm not into it.

Holistic living is much simpler and broader than that.  If you just Google "holism," you find a great definition that explains exactly what I mean.  It says that "parts of a whole are in intimate interconnection, such that they cannot exist independently of the whole, or cannot be understood without reference to the whole, which is thus regarded as greater than the sum of its parts."

Basically, there are different parts of us that work together to create the person that you see.  You're at your best when all of your parts, or selves, are working together.  Even though you have to consider the whole person to really understand the individual selves, it's also easier if we do treat these selves as separate when we're working on our selves.

The main areas that people usually address when talking about holistic living are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual.  I honestly cared way more about my mental and emotional health for many years because I dealt with untreated depression, anxiety, and inattention for years.  When I finally started to explore my spiritual beliefs, I basically changed into a different person.  Now I'm working on all of my selves because I feel like they're all at the same level.  If one of your selves feels like it's significantly lower than the others, focus on that one first.  If you feel that they're actually pretty level, feel free to put a little attention to each area.

Basically, holistic living doesn't have to mean that you're on a very restricted diet or that you spend most of your day in meditation.  It means that you make sure that each part of your self is where it needs to be so you can be your best self.  You can't get rid of these parts, so you might as well take care of them!  I've also seen people include interpersonal, environmental, and financial selves in their holistic living.  I would definitely recommend starting with the four main selves (physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual) before you move on to these.
